On May 22, the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (“CNIPA”) officially launched a new “Search by Image” function on the China Trademark Network’s online trademark search system. The new feature allows users to upload trademark image files directly to conduct similarity searches for device and logo trademarks.
The launch marks another important step in CNIPA’s ongoing efforts to integrate artificial intelligence technologies into trademark examination and public trademark services in China.
How to Use the “Search by Image” Function
The new feature is available through the official China Trademark Online Search System.
Step 1 – Enter the Trademark Similarity Search Section
Users should first visit the China Trademark Search System (registration is required before using) and enter the “Trademark Similarity Search” (SISTM) section of the online trademark search system.
Step 2 – Select “Image retrieval”
Under the “Automatic Search” option, users can select the new “Image retrieval” feature to search by image.
Step 3 – Upload the Trademark Image
Users may upload a trademark image file for comparison and retrieval. The system currently supports the following image formats:
- PNG
- JPEG
- JPG
The uploaded image must not exceed 2MB in size.
Step 4 – Review Similar Trademark Results
After the image is uploaded and a class number is entered, the system automatically performs an AI-powered similarity search and displays potentially similar trademarks.
Practical Significance for Trademark Applicants
The newly launched “Search by Image” function is expected to significantly reduce the difficulty of conducting graphical trademark searches in China, improve trademark filing efficiency, and increase the success rate of registration.
